Michele Horrigan by Michele Horrigan
In Horrigan’s work, subjects are familiar and yet culturally specific. The deliberately deadpan and unaffected approach taken by the artist to explore issues places emphasis on the mundane aspect of everyday life, as her approach further deconstructs myths and preconceptions. These works can be said to adhere to arisotle’s Principle of recognition, “the change from ignorance to Knowledge”, where something is discovered which transforms the situation. This concept was originally applied to theatre and dramatic productions where a twist in the plot would reveal the true qualities of a character or the outcome of a situation. In a similar way, the true characteristics and realities of Horrigan’s artwork are gradually revealed by recognition of the realities of life through documentary engagement. It is these subtle observances that distinguish Horrigan’s work and enrich and illuminate the everyday experience for the viewer.
