ANNOUNCING A NEW PUBLICATION BASED ON OUR MASS ISOLATION PROJECT
As the majority of COVID-19 restrictions come to an end in Ireland and elsewhere we can look back on an extraordinary period in our recent history. Gallery of Photography Ireland is delighted to announce a new publication bringing together a selection of images from our Mass Isolation Instagram project. Inspired by Mass-Observation, the social research organisation founded in 1937, Mass Isolation invited people to share images of their experiences during the first COVID-19 lockdown in Ireland through social media.
Mass Isolation project
This new publication features a wide cross-section of images from the project. It has been curated by Darja Zeitzev from the Northern Photographic Centre, Oulu, Finland, one of our partners on the project, and includes a thoughtful essay from Ailbhe Greaney, photographer and lecturer. With over 120 images from 85 contributors, the Mass Isolation publication gives a unique insight into how people experienced the COVID-19 pandemic and serves as a lasting record of the way photography as a medium can bring people together in a time of crisis.
Using specially created hashtags, the Mass Isolation project grew into a crowd-sourced online archive with over 30,000 photos contributed to date, and over 9,000 shared in Ireland alone, showing the impact of the COVID-19 on daily life around the world. The project ran on Instagram between March and June 2020. To view the complete archive, search the tags #massisolationproject and #massisolationIRL on Instagram. Initiated by Gallery of Photography Ireland, it was subsequently taken up by partner organisations in the UK, Finland and Australia. You can view the international contributions to the project here:
The Mass Isolation publication will be available to purchase exclusively from the Gallery of Photography Ireland bookshop priced €10
