Description
Photographs Collected and Edited by: Hans Aarsman, Claudie de Cleen, Julian Germain, Erik Kessels, Hans van der Meer.
From the contributors: “When taken, these studio portraits, snapshots, passport photos were perhaps unremarkable. Now each one of the people pictured is missing — their photographs given to the [United Kingdom’s] National Missing Persons Helpline (NMPH) by their families or friends for the purpose of making public appeals. Unremarkable when they were made, these portrait images now have a vital significance.”
Useful Photography is a magazine which gives a platform to imagery that is part of our everyday lives but which is rarely studied or appreciated; for example pictures from catalogues, instruction manuals, text books, medical and scientific journals, packaging, CCTV, etc. Images that have been made for a practical purpose, whose makers remain completely anonymous. Through a process of careful selection and the creation of a new context in the magazine, galleries and on the Useful Photography website, these photographs are re-presented and reconsidered

Whilst there is a photography tradition of documenting the American road trip, I felt that traveling by bike would expose me to opportunities and encounters that could be overlooked if travelled by car or bus. Taking a slower pace and being on my own speed allowed me, as an observer passing through small American towns, to see the beauty in the banality of everyday life. I feel the decision to cycle not only gave me a stronger connection the landscape but also to the people I met along the way.
